A Note on Kintsugi

Kintsugi is a traditional Japanese restoration method using natural urushi lacquer. It celebrates the history of each piece and remains food-safe.

Please note:

  • It’s best to avoid using everyday mugs or pieces that are constantly exposed to high-temperature steam.

  • We recommend not using restored kintsugi pieces in microwaves, dishwashers, or ovens.

  • If a piece is finished with metal powder, the surface may gradually wear with use, revealing the underlying urushi (red or black lacquer). This is a characteristic of traditional kintsugi and a beautiful sign of aging, so please enjoy this unique transformation over time.

  • Kintsugi is traditionally applied to ceramic and porcelain works. Glass and wooden pieces can sometimes be considered, though they would require consultation in advance.

The Value of the Craft

Traditional kintsugi takes about three months to complete, using carefully harvested urushi (lacquer sap), pure gold, and other precious materials. Each restoration is a delicate process, making it a meaningful and lasting craft.

Because of this, kintsugi restoration can be a significant undertaking. As a general guide:

  • Small chip: around $100

  • Half break (piece split in two): from $200

If a piece is easily replaceable, buying a new one may be more practical. But if it carries memories and meaning that cannot be replaced, kintsugi offers a way to honor and preserve it. In Japan, vessels are said to be “nurtured.” Through kintsugi, a piece becomes more than functional—it becomes a companion, carrying its story forward and, with care, lasting beautifully for generations.
